Congratulations to two of our Leaving Cert Students from the class of 2022, Oisin Friel and Ash Caulfield who were the recipients of the Carty Scholarship / Mevagh Parish. In 1970, Barbara and Bud McCarty, both Americans from New York City, purchased the schoolhouse in Glen and were year-round residents until they passed away. Both are buried in the graveyard of St. John the Baptist Church in Carrigart. Upon Bud’s passing, The Duffers golfing group established a Scholarship in 1985 to honour Barbara and Bud’s memory. The Scholarship was established to reward students from the parish of Mevagh who achieved the highest Leaving Cert results. Four prizes are given annually to two students from both Loreto Community School and Mulroy College.
Today, the Scholarship is given by the McCarty Daughters, Barbara McCarty Bluestone, and Eileen McCarty Magill. Barbara resides in the USA while Eileen resides in The Schoolhouse in Glen with her husband David Magill.
The Scholarship is administered by local Trustees Fr. Charlie Byrne, Marietta Herraghty, Downings, Maretta McLaughlin, Glen and Andrew Speer, Carrigart.
