Thanks to the hard-working 'Green School' committee for this summary of their excellent work this term:

The Green School Programme has changed our school drastically in the past two years. We moved from an old school ,where little thought went into recycling, to a new school with a great recycling program which is making the school a cleaner place to work. We have shown throughout the school that we can make a difference with the recycling bins placed strategically throughout the school.

A food composter and the worm bin, placed outside, are up and running and eating up organic matter from the home economics kitchens and indeed the staff room. We would like to thank the students and the teachers for cleaning their plates when they are done with their food. This is a huge help in separating the waste food and allowing more re-cycling. The lynch pin of our re-cycling system is the voluntary, student rota. The captain of the rota is his lordship Dean Shields. Dean types out the rota on a weekly basis, checks for absences and is the rota ‘super-sub' if someone is absent. The rota is going very well and is an essential part of the system, with students willing to empty the bins on a daily basis. We have a great waste collection system and it is a huge change in our attitude when our caretaker Dominick is baling plastic and paper and preparing it for re-cycling instead of sending it to landfill for dumping.

We have written letterto the parents' council and the local paper. We would like to thank them for their support. As a reward for our work we have been out on a walk to Min Na h-Ua , our lovely, local mountain-scape and good craic was had by all. Along the way we saw and identified some of Ireland's native trees like the ash and the oak. We would also like to tell you that we are planning a day of action which will consist of the students going out to help clean up the school.

Please continue to give us your support...

Yours faithfully

The Green School Committee
